What is the best way to talk to a heroin addict without showing you are scared of him?

Question by neelia_lyn: What is the best way to talk to a heroin addict without showing you are scared of him?
We have a neighbor that is an addict. His father wanted him in jail or in a rehab but he has to plan what is best for his son. every time we pass by their house, we don’t know how to respond to him sometimes specially if he looks like he’s high. We have no evidence that he’s using heroin but he acts weird sometimes
This is a good person by nature. It is just lately that he started acting weird and sometimes dangerous.

he cant be forced into drugs counciling/rehab unless he is on a court/probation/community order,he has to want to do it otherwise he will be allowed to walk out.

all people around him can do is encourage him and show him the benefits of getting help whilst avoiding bringing up where hes gone wrong,he needs support at this stage,he cant be forced.
people often become addicted to heroin through self medicating for other issues or problems in their lives so he may have had a lot of things going on to need that much of a break in reality.

does he have another mental illness or any other issues that woud cause him to ‘act weird’? treat him as woud treat any other neighbour when passing him,but keep distance if are not ok,hes still human even if he is addicted to heroin,he woudnt be fully high if he was walking about as normal so shoud be interactive to some level.
