Question by Dakort: Help……!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
I dont know how 2 do an essay & i need ur help to see if this good or not.

Over one million American seek short cuts to larger muscles and greater endurance with anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. Steroids are drugs that act like chemical in the body. Most steroids are transformed into testosterone when they enter the body. Testosterone is a male growth hormone. While user may gain short-term results, they are seriously changing their health.

Some of the ill effects of the drugs are damage to the kidneys and liver. A person can also alter the balance of the natural hormones. This can cause detrimental affects to the body. The effects of you natural hormones being out of balance can last several years after being off the drugs. Some male user form breasts due to the use of steroids. Because of the increase in testosterone, steroids can cause serious acne problems. When used by teens it can cause stunted growth. Other side effects include genital changes, water retention, yellow eyes, coronary artery disease, ligament injuries, high blood pressure, changes in cholesterol levels, sterility and liver disease. Some people fall into comas after injecting the drug, some may even die from the injection.

Although steroids have many negative effects, they have many needed medical purposes. Androgens have many legitimate medical uses, such as the use for treatment of hypogonadal men to compensate for the lack of endogenous production. Anabolic steroids are also helpful for the treatment of certain adolescent diseases, some types of anemias, and for a relatively rare form of edema. Other clinical uses focus on the tissue building and anti-catabolic effects, such as in the treatment of burn victims, AIDS, or HIV positive patients. The most well known reason for people using steroids is for the quick muscle growth. At first they were hailed for their ability in improving strength and stamina but now they are condemned as unnatural and dangerous to the health of an athlete.

In conclusion, I think that people shouldn’t use steroids because they can damage your body after only one use by shutting down hormones and hormone producing glands in the body.
Shud i change something about it….or everything….???

Alcohol related brain damage?

Question by : Alcohol related brain damage?
Alcohol related brain damage?
I am wondering about brain damage resulting from isolated heavy drinking nights. I have read that if you drink a ridiculous amount and narrowly escape death you may have irreversibly damaged your brain. I can’t find anywhere on the internet information about this that could help me figure out whether I have brain damage from alcohol. The other night I drank a fifth of 70 proof liquor in no more than 4 hours, though I can’t be certain about how long it took me because I don’t remember anything after I had taken the water level in the bottle down about 4 inches. I weigh 165 pounds. I blacked out quickly and the next thing I knew I was in my bed the next day with a little bit of vomit on my pillow and sheets. I was conscious enough to navigate my driver to my home, which was after I finished off the bottle, and I threw up in the car on the way home. And people said that had a good time with me that night so I don’t think I was lying down in the corner unconscious. I have a weak stomach and I have always considered that my safety net from alcohol poisoning. I always thought that I would start throwing up long before alcohol poisoning could even become an issue, since throwing up would make me stop drinking that night. But in my reading, I have learned that drinking hard liquor really quickly can actually dangerously slow down your gag reflexes so you aren’t guaranteed to throw up efficiently. I have never been one to drink very often…. I have never had addiction… but sometimes, with the right type of liquor, I just end up drinking it too fast, maybe because I don’t give my body enough time to absorb it before drinking more, and my decision making process is a little messed up when I’m drinking liquor, to say the least. The night I just described is an example of one of only a handful of major blackout nights I have had in my life. I’m 23 years old. In fact, the night I just described might even be the closest I have ever come to alcohol poisoning, based on how much I drank and how fast. My hangover wasn’t terrible since I slept through much of the next day. I didn’t throw up at all after I woke up. I usually throw up when I’m hungover. My concern is not alcoholism, or the sort of brain damage that results from a long drinking history…. my concern is with the type of brain damage that can occur when you drink too much just one time. I have read that when you have a high enough BAL you don’t take enough breaths and starve your brain of oxygen…. I don’t know if I have done that. I have always seemed to recover fine from my black out nights… certainly no symptoms of any “brain damage.” But then again, what would be symptoms of brain damage? All I can find on the internet about this matter is: “alcohol poisoning can cause irreversible brain damage.” Nothing more. How exactly does lack of oxygen damage the brain? what part of the brain does it damage? And what would a person who got brain damage be like afterwards? Would they have a different personality? Would they be slower witted? I just really want to know the likelihood of me having a damged brain, even if it’s just a little tiny bit of damage. I certainly don’t feel like I have a damaged brain, but if you ask me if I have ever had alcohol poisining… I would have to say that yes I probably have.

What are the tell-tale signs that someone is addicted to heroin?

Question by deirdre s: What are the tell-tale signs that someone is addicted to heroin?
I think my brother takes heroin, as I know his friends do. How will I be able to tell for sure without having to ask him?

Best answer:

Answer by celina dch
Have you noticed changes in his appearance? If his eyes are always red and his pupils dilated, this might be a sign. Drastic loss or gain of weight are also signs. See if his personality has changed too. If he was once placid and is now violent, or if his grades have recently been declining. If he possesses drug paraphernalia, that’s a big clue too. Be on the lookout for tourniquets, foils, pipes, syringes. If these signs are evident in your brother, talk to him about this and tell your parents. Good luck!

Streets of Plenty Trailer

Vancouver has been voted the best city in the world to live in but it has a dark secret — the downtown east side ghetto. With the roughest neighbourhood and the highest crime rate in North America living conditions here are on a par with third world countries, and homelessness and drug-addiction are rife. And yet provisions for those in need couldn’t be better. Misha Kleider, in an effort to find out what is going wrong, goes under cover for a month in December leaving behind his apartment, his friends and his wallet to see first-hand what life on the streets is really like. Starting with nothing but his underwear he journeys through the institutions and services available to the homeless and makes some startling revelations along the way. The experience upsets any pre-conceived notions about how to “fix” the problem and what begins as a social experiment in the vein of Orwell’s’ Down and Out in Paris and London takes a darker turn as Misha connects with the real residents of the downtown east side ghetto; the crack addicts, the junkies, the dealers and the diseased. As Misha becomes more involved in this world, the film speeds towards a shocking finale that will leave you breathless and in awe. Streets of Plenty is a fearless, fast paced and entertaining exploration of what it means to live on the streets of North America’s worst ghetto.

Q&A: How can I help my sister with her addiction problems?

Question by ruondafloyet: How can I help my sister with her addiction problems?
She is an alcoholic, abuses illegal drugs, suffers from food addiction, chain smokes, has low self-esteem, can barely keep a job, etc.

Is she a lost cause? I’ve heard that a female abusing her body like this leads doubley fast to serious health problems in the future over a male who does the same. She is my younger sister who lives with my mom. I don’t think my mom knows how to help her anymore either. She has been to AA. It did nothing to help her; in fact she called it a joke.

Any hope out there? I know she needs to help herself, but how far does she need to go to hit absolute rock bottom…to be out on the street?? It is painful for me to hear the stories of what goes on at home and what my mom (and she) go through. Any help would be great.
Ok… maybe an answer from someone who’s not in this section because he or she is the reason for this section…. Geez answerer #1…

Alcohol and Your Body

This webisode looks at the negative effects of drinking on your body and overall health.

“Mandy” (or “Brandy” in 1971) was a 1974 hit song for Barry Manilow. It was his first number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts, and his first gold single. The song was written by Scott English under the title “Brandy”, with music by Richard Kerr. Released by English in 1971, “Brandy” reached number 12 in the UK Singles Charts, but the fast-tempo version was a flop in the United States. The suggestion that Scott English wrote the song about a favorite dog is apparently an urban legend. English has said that a reporter called him early one morning asking who “Brandy” was, and an irritated English made up the “dog” story to get the reporter off his back. The line “you kissed me and stopped me from shaking” that appears in the lyrics has led some to believe that the song refers literally to brandy, specifically alcoholism and the DT’s of alcohol withdrawal. In the three years between English’s 1971 recording and Manilow’s, Looking Glass had a hit song with “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” in 1972. Therefore, to avoid confusion, when Manilow decided to make his record, he changed the title to “Mandy”. It was Clive Davis who suggested that Manilow record the song. Manilow originally recorded it as an up-tempo bubblegum pop tune similar to English’s original, but he and the producer reportedly hated the way it turned out; thus, he sang it as a ballad and was much more pleased with the results.- Wikipedia Barry Manilow – Mandy (1974)

E-Mail Addiction!!!????

Question by antmanbee: E-Mail Addiction!!!????
PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) – Alcoholics have one, and so do drug abusers. Now people addicted to e-mail also have a 12-step program designed to tackle their obsession.

An executive coach in Pennsylvania has devised a plan to teach people how to manage the electronic tool, which some users say can be as much an intrusive waste of time as it is fast-paced and efficient.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070220/wr_nm/life_work_emails_dc

I scoff at this concept as I scoff at “Sex Addiction”.

These trendy addictions divert attention from and may tend to trivialize REAL ADDICTIONS.

The 12 step formula is a good approach to almost any aspect in life I will not deny that. Been to a couple of thousand A meetings myself.
But save the word ADDICTION for the real thing.

Concur?
thats a couple of thousand AA meetings.
I hate typos that I can’t go back to correct

What is RADD?

1800 college students die nationwide every year from alcohol related incidents, and over 75% of those deaths are vehicle related. Sometimes this gets ignored in the glamorous or stereo typical thinking about college drinking. SDSU is collaborating with an organization called RADD (Entertainment Industries Voice for Traffic Safety). They have a program that the state is helping to fund to encourage the use of designated drivers by providing students with RADD CA designated driver’s licenses. They can show this driver’s license at local establishments and get free non-alcoholic drinks and discounts on appetizers. When the student is ordering and pulls out the card this is their reminder to have a designated driver, and they are less likely to have someone drive drunk. One of their fun late night programs is the go cart racing they do in a large parking lot from 10pm to 1am. They have to test a ’0′ on a breathalyzer before they can drive, and they are given a RADD driver’s license. This is to promote that they can have fun at this event and drive fast, but out on the real road they have to be safe and remember to have a designated driver and to use their RADD driver’s license. James Lange is the chairman for SDSU’s Alcohol and Other Drug Initiatives, or AOD Initiatives, an initiative that works with colleges to develop campus-wide programs to prevent alcohol and drug abuse. Lange has been the lead researcher on a number of AOD projects and is a consultant to a wide range of
