Which there is absolutely nothing wrong with being just drug/alcohol free and not claiming edge, but at the same time, I believe you do have to be actively in a hardcore scene particularly with other straight edge people, for the simple fact that to me it wouldnt make sense to go to bumf*ck nowhere and be like, I’m straight edge… That means nothing outside of hardcore, its a subculture term and lifelong commitment. Its not a lifestyle.

To one of the comments below, my response is: I believe you do have to be involved within a hardcore scene to necessarily be straight edge. Think about it, you can be drug free, alcohol free, etc. all you want without being in a scene or anything for that matter. But the term straight edge, has everything to do with hardcore in the sense that….its where the term came from. Straight Edge is a life choice within the subculture of hardcore, otherwise you are simply drug/alcohol free.

In all actuality if this makes sense, its a sub-sub-culture. A sub-culture within another sub-culture if you will. Hardcore obviously is a sub-culture the regular lame world we all live in. But then there is straight edge, which is in my eyes another culture of its own within hardcore.

I’m proud to say that I have been Clean(SxE) all my life. I’m gonna be 23 and I’ve been straight edge since before i knew the term Straight Edge. If people want to claim it or not it’s up to them, it still doesn’t change the fact that they live a clean life and that’s what counts.

It’s not about just being “drug free” it’s a lot more then that. And that’s what people don’t get. It’s hard to explain to people who aren’t edge at least it is for me. Usually people who like hardcore and punk and don’t do drugs or drink claim edge. Because that’s where it all started. Not saying you have to like hardcore music to be edge i’m just saying most people who like that type of music are edge and are part of that community.

my friends and i are close to 30 and theyre still edge. and why does it matter if you claim edge or not? the reason should be for YOU. for YOUR health, for YOUR own reasons. the only time i mention i’m sober is when i’m offered a beer. i dont prefer to put my shit out there. but if others do then good for them. its good to be proud! its good to believe in SOMETHING when everything else around you seems to be failing.

in response to why he doesnt consider straight edge a lifestyle

    ... on July March 7th, 2010
  15. ColdHeartLegacy says:

what he’s implying is that by living without any substances you’re living simply and purely as ‘yourself’ and that by keeping away from that shit you’re just living your life. i get what you’re saying tho. btw, its ian mackaye, he wrote the song “straight edge” and other songs explaining the ideology this is all based on

@peterbra I’m 20, turn 21 this year in may and I have been straight edge since my sophmore year of highschool. And I have no plans to drink or party my 21st birthday. So what you’re saying is incredibly narrow minded and very stereotypical.

also i sing in a band thus why i dont smoke but i mean if you kids a lot of them being 15/16 who majority of them don’t even have access to alcohol or drugs have to put ”xxx” or xpeterx in your name is just pathetic and that’s what people define as posers also one last thing we all know all these little kids are gonna grow to 18 or 21 in the states and go absolutely fucking nuts and party and drink and do drugs so don’t fucking tell anyone im edge im fucking pure cause you can shut the fuck up

    ... on July March 7th, 2010
  21. PeterBraa says:

ok this debate is fucked i mean if we get into technicalities i would be considered edge due to not doing drugs, drinking, smoking ect. though i mean the reason i don t label myself as straight edge is mainly cause of the fact that i don’t see myself as anyone that special to need to have to point out to someone that hey im straight edge your a fucking scummy cunt for drinking i mean i don’t do the shit cause of addiction problems in my family

I didnt say getting blind drunk was in moderation. Of course there are ppl out there who let’s it take control of their lives, but there are ppl out there who actually take it in moderation & they seem to be fine.
If u dont wanna drink, that’s ur choice, but don’t bag out other ppl for it. That’s what most u edge kids seem to do, & always acting like ur better than everybody else.

    ... on July March 7th, 2010
  25. donkeypoo99 says:

but how often are things actually taken in moderation?
most people drink for the sole purpose of getting drunk. i wouldnt call that moderation.
