Risk factors include blood pressure, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, alcohol and irregular heartbeats. Signs include sudden weakness & numbness in arms, leg, face, nausea, which should not be ignored. Sufferers have trouble with speech. Samadi advised using the FAST test: FACE – F (ask sufferer to smile, does face droop?); Arms – (Ask them to raise arms, does one arm drift down?); S – Speech (can they repeat sentence, is speech slurred?); T – time (call 911, time lost is brain lost). There is only a 3 to 4 hr window of oppportunity to treat and reduce major damage.
